Tis material can be used independently, although
together it deals with the requirements of certain
aspects of National Curriculum Key Stage 3 History.

Some of the material may be of use with Key Stage 2
pupils in STUDY UNIT 5, LOCAL HISTORY.

Page 9 of the National Curriculum Guide (HMSO,
January 1995) states :

'Pupils should be taught about an aspect of local
history.'

a) an aspect of the local community over a long
   period of time.

or

b) an aspect of the local community during a short
period of time or the local community's
involvement in a particular event, e.g. the
impact of the Norman Conquest on a local area.

or

c) an aspect of the local community that
illustrates developments taught in the study
   units, e.g. local fortifications.

In Key Stage 3 History, one of the specific Study
Units is :

Medieval Realms : Britain 1066-1500.

On page 12 of the guide, direct reference is made
to 'castle building'.
