"The Normans built MOTTE and bailey castles when 
they first conquered England.

These castles were designed around an earth mound,
which had a TOWER and STOCKADE made of wood on top.

As early as 1067 these were replaced with stone
castles.

William the Conqueror brought one of his best
builders, a Bishop called Gundulf, to England to
work on the TOWER of London. 

Gundulf replaced the tower here with a stone KEEP.

The KEEP was the strongest part of the castle. The
lord or baron would live here when visiting his
castle.

The KEEP in the TOWER of London was called the
WHITE TOWER because the stonework was painted
white."
