                  !Ged-Web
                 =========
             v0.15 18.1.2002

This application is designed to generate a linked set of HTML
pages from a standard GEDCOM family-tree file. This can then
either provide an alternative way of viewing the data, or
can be uploaded to your web site to share with the world!

The operation is very simple: just drag a Gedcom file onto the
icon, and a window will open, showing some details about the
file. The icon labelled Title shows the string which will be
used as the title on the index page - alter it to your taste!

Then drag the sprite to show where the tree is to be saved, and
click Create. An application will be created where your pages
are saved within a directory called Pages. Running the
application will cause your browser to display the index page.

The structure created consists of a single page for each family
group defined in the file - zero, one or two adults and zero or
more of their children. Each person on a page is linked to any
other pages where they feature - typically, one where they are
a child and another where they are a spouse, although multiple
marriages are handled correctly. The family window also gives brief
details of the children's spouse(s), linked to their own famillies.

The index page lists all these family groups, enabling the tree
to be navigated starting from any family, and each page links
back to the index.

The index page can be controlled, to some degree, from the Options
window, available from the Menu or by right-clicking the
icon-bar icon:

the index can have male-female or female-male pairs, or you
can chose to have two indices, one in each style

the index (or indices) can be sorted alphabetically, on first or
last name, instead of appearing in the fairly arbitrary order of
     the GEDCOM file.

the index can be centred on the page

you can chose whether to use a table for the index. I feel the
layout looks better with a table, but as some people dislike
using them, a choice is provided

if you are using a table, it can be slow to load if you have a
large tree. So you can elect to split a table into smaller
sections, defined by the (adjustable) number shown

you can choose to link the files so that each one
they all open in the same browser window
each opens in a new browser window
links from the index only open in a new window.

Finally, the files saved can have names ending /htm or /html. For
your personal use, this is irrelevant, but if you plan to
upload them, you should choose whatever extension your ISP
requires. !Voyager users should ensure that this matches
      their choice in Webload.

The selected options can be applied to the current tree and/or saved
  for future use,

Three further options are set in the !run file, as they cannot be changed
while !Gedweb is running:

GedWeb$Indi defines the maximum number of individuals which can be handled
  GedWeb$Fam ............ of families.
  and GedWeb$Notes ............ of families.

Either or both of these can be increased if necessary. You will also need
to increase the wimp slot if you increase them by much - the symptom will
be errors of the type 'No room for this DIM' or 'Too many nested structures'
which indicate that you have run out of memory in the wimp-slot.

If you want to publish your tree on the WWW, you need to upload the
Pages directory, and provide a link to Pages/index.html or
Pages/index.htm depending on your options setting.

The index page has a link to my web site, so that visitors can obtain
a copy of !GedWeb for themselves. If you object to this, just remove it.
You can edit the line starting me: in !GedWeb.Messages to alter this text,
or several other lines to change the standard text used.

Note that from v0.13, if you rename the applicaton holding the output files,
its sprite will automatically chnage to match the new name.
