Using Word Hound with other applications
========================================

Word Hound has been designed to work with other applications, for example
word processors, DTP packages, etc. In particular Word Hound has been
designed to hotlink with Impression (see below).

In order to pass words, that you wish to look up, to Word Hound the other
application needs to be able to save a selected piece of text. In general
the process will be something like the following, but the details might be
different for some applications :

1) Select the word, you wish to pass to Word Hound, within the other
   application.

2) Bring up the 'Save Selection' option (or what ever it is called).

3) Drag the icon from the 'Save Selection' window to either Word Hound's
iconbar icon, or Word Hound's 'Enter' window.

4) Word Hound will then perform a normal search for that word.

When you then want to pass a word or phrase back to the other application,
what you need to do will vary upon the other application. Some applications
will replace the selected text with what ever Word Hound passes to it,
others will simply add the text leaving the selection alone. To be able to
pass a word (or phrase) to another application, the other application must
hold the caret, and the word will be entered at the caret position.

When a selection is passed to Word Hound the first word (which is not
contained within curly brackets) contained within it is used as the search
word. This means that you can pass more than one word to Word Hound, it also
means that if you drag a selection from (say) Impression it does not matter
if you include 'styles' as this information is contained within curly
brackets.

If, when you drag a selection to Word Hound, you hold down the SHIFT key,
rather than perform a normal search automatically, Word Hound will simply
enter that word into it's writable icon (in the 'Enter' window) and await
further instructions (for example a 'Sounds Like' search).

Word Hound and Case Sensitivity
-------------------------------

When a word is searched for by Word Hound (whether it's passed by the above method, or simply typed into the writable icon) the case (upper or lower) of that word is ignored during the search, but it is noted. When you come to pass a word, or phrase, to another application the case is then matched to that of the word used in the search.

When the word searched for was its first letter as upper case and the rest
lower case this will also be matched in the word passed to another
application.

Word Hound and Impression
--------------------------

Word Hound will hotlink with Impression II (version 2.17, and above). With
this hotlink words selected within Impression are automatically picked up by
Word Hound, and any words selected in Word Hound can be passed directly to
Impression.

All you need to do to get the hotlinking up and running is to have both Word
Hound and Impression running, and have Word Hound's 'Enter' window open (you
can leave it at the back of the window stack, or under Risc-OS 3 you can
move it off screen, or even iconise it). From then on every time you select
a word within Impression, Word Hound will make a note of it (or the first
word in a selection if more than one word is selected).

Then if you then press SHIFT-INSERT Word Hound will take the last word
selected and perform a normal search on it, bringing up the 'Selection'
window as normal. If you then select a word, or phrase, in either the
'Display' or 'Quick definition' window, it will be passed directly to
Impression (which will place it instead of the selected text).

If you don't want to perform a normal search on the selected word (ie. you
want to do a 'Wild Card' or 'Sounds Like' search), then simply press
CTRL-SHIFT-INSERT and Word Hound will simply place the last selected word
into the writable icon within the 'Enter' window.

When using the hotlinking system, Impression takes over making sure that the
case (upper / lower) of the replacement word matches the case original word.

Once you have started using the hotlink with Impression, Word Hound will
continue sending 'selected' words directly to Impression rather than to the
caret. This could cause problems if you start using a different application
after Impression. Thus after using the hotlink system, if you wish to use
Word Hound with another application simply close Word Hound's 'Enter' window
and reopen it. This will have the effect of resetting Word Hound into normal
(non Impression) mode.

If Computer Concepts update their Impulse module (used by the hotlinking
system) for any future release of Impression, it will be necessary to either
make sure you always start Impression before Word Hound, or update the
ImpulseII module within Word Hound's directory to be the same as the updated
Impression version.
