Re: OS/2 PPC edition can be installed on thinkpad power series 820

Thanks Tero. A laptop with a SCSI drive, that is interesting. I look forward to your writeup.

Ok first things first so things I used/needed for installing PPC ed on Power Series 820 thinkpad:

1. Power series 820 Thinkpad with 32 mb ram(16 isnt quite enough)
2. External SCSI closure with 1.2Gb hd
3. SCSI cable between laptop and HD closure
4. ISO image of OS/2 PPC install CD
5. Another computer running Linux and equipped with SCSI adapter and burning cdrom
6. Hex editor installed on Linux Machine(I used VCHE)
7. Blank CD-R

So here are the steps:

1. Open ISO image with hex editor(on Linux)
2. Find first occurence of PN_BOOT_CONFIG="boot.cfg"
3. Change it to PN_BOOT_CONFIG="boot.sci"
4. Close Hex editor and burn Image to cd
5. Connect your external HD to Thinkpad(to make things easier use SCSI ID 6)
6. Power up Thinkpad and hit F4 during boot
7. Change boot device order to(1.Cdrom 2.HD6)
8. Put OS/2 CDROM in drive
9. Reboot
10. Cd should now start installation phase 1
11. After installation connect external HD to your Linux box
12. redo steps 2. and 3.
13. Put HD back to thinkpad and power it up(without CD in drive)
14. Now installation phase 2 should create desktop etc.
15. Finished

If it doesnt not work for some reason, you should connect your linux box to thinkpad with serial cable. I used miniterm to communicate with OS/2 you can debug boot process this way and also interfere with boot choices.
