HDS Au Audio Client Manual Page

NAME
auhds - HDS NetAudio server

SYNOPSIS
auhds [:listen port offset] [-option ...]

DESCRIPTION
auhds is the name of the NetAudio server running as a down-loaded client on the HDS ViewStation. The auhds NetAudio server provides ViewStation audio services to applications on the network.

See netaudio(1) for more information.

STARTING THE SERVER
If frequent use is expected, auhds should be started in the background from the ViewStation's Startup Command File. If only occasional use is expected, auhds can be started when needed via the HDS Console or by using the Remote Shell protocol.

When the NetAudio server starts up, it takes over the ViewStation's local /dev/ audio. Note that other local applications that attempt to access /dev/audio (such as hdsplay) will fail while it is running.

NOTES
The HDS ViewStation local client hdsaudio can be used in conjunction with auhds to control output speaker selection, volume, etc. The auhds server can only be used on ViewStations equipped with the optional HDS MultiMedia Audio Card.

NETWORK CONNECTIONS
The NetAudio server supports connections made using the following reliable byte-streams:
TCP/IP The server listens on port 8000+n, where n is the listen port offset.
Unix Domain The NetAudio server uses /dev/netaudion as the filename for the socket, where n is the display number.

OPTIONS
The auhds server accepts the following command line options:

-aa
Allows clients on any host to connect. By default, access is allowed only to clients on the local host. This option should almost always be specified.

SIGNALS
The NetAudio server attaches special meaning to the following signals:

SIGHUP
This signal causes the server to close all existing connections, free all resources, and restore all defaults.

SIGTERM This signal causes the server to exit cleanly.

SIGUSR1 This signal is used quite differently from either of the above. When the server starts, it checks to see if it has inherited SIGUSR1 as SIG_IGN instead of the usual SIG_DFL. In this case, the server sends a SIGUSR1 to its parent process after it has set up the various connection schemes.

DIAGNOSTICS
Too numerous to list them all. If started in the background, messages are usually logged through the ViewStation's syslog facility.

AUTHORS
The HDS version of the NetAudio server was based on the publically-available NetAudio server source originally written by Greg Renda and Dave Lemke, which has large amounts of code borrowed from the sample X server.

The sample X server was originally written by Susan Angebranndt, Raymond Drewry, Philip Karlton, and Todd Newman, from Digital Equipment Corporation, with support from a large cast. It has since been extensively rewritten by Keith Packard and Bob Scheifler, from MIT.
