This page describes the ViewStation's Audio operation
and ways to use it with application programs.
Using
ViewStation Audio with Application Programs
Application programs that can play audio files usually try to start
an "audio player" on the display that actually plays the audio. This
audio player usually has a name, and running the ViewStation's audio
usually just means creating a shell script that substitutes the
ViewStation's audio player for the application program's audio player
name.
The Mosaic Internet browser uses an audio player called
"showaudio". It looks for this program name in your path and executes
the file when an audio file needs to be played. This is a script to
allow Mosaic and its "showaudio" player to play an audio file on the
ViewStation. Name the script "showaudio" and put it in your path.
#!/bin/sh
#
# Script to play an audio file on the HDS ViewStation.
#
# Usage: showaudio filename
#
# The ViewStation hostname is determined from the DISPLAY
# environment variable. The IP address cannot be used
# directly with the `rsh' command.
# remote_shell_cmd=rsh
remhost=`expr "$DISPLAY" : "\([^:]*\).*"`
if [ `expr "$DISPLAY" : "[0-9]"` -ne 0 ]
then
remhost=`grep "^$remhost[^0-9]" /etc/hosts | awk '{print
$2}'`
fi
exec $remote_shell_cmd $remhost hdsplay - < $1
This example with Mosaic is typical of many application
programs. Check the audio process used by your application and make the
appropriate adjustments to these examples.
