This
page describes ViewStation memory, includes memory management and memory
upgrades.
ViewStation SIMM Memory
The ViewStation
uses standard SIMM memory modules. They are 32-bits wide and should be
70 nanoseconds or faster. They should have tin contacts. These SIMMs are
available from HDS or are also available from commercial suppliers.
The ViewStation LX, FX, Dual, and Multimedia series bases
accept SIMM modules of any size (for instance, you can mix 4 MB and 8 MB
modules) but the ViewStation Ultra series must use pairs of identical
SIMM modules (it can use two 8 MB modules, but not an 8 MB and a 4 MB).
The LX, FX, and Dual series ViewStations have 4 MB of memory
on the main board in addition to any memory in the SIMM sockets; Ultra
and Multimedia ViewStations do not have any memory on the circuit board
and use the SIMM sockets exclusively.
Memory Upgrades
SIMM modules are easily installed in the ViewStation by the user. All
that is required is opening the ViewStation base and inserting the
SIMMs. You should be careful with static electricity as this can damage
the memory modules. Press the SIMM module into the socket (it is keyed,
so it only fits one way) at an angle, and then rotate the SIMM to an
upright position until the latches on each side lock it into place.
The ViewStation should recognize the memory automatically - the new
memory amount will be displayed in the header bar of Setup Mode. If the
memory is not recognized, check that the SIMM modules are correctly
seated.
Memory Management
The ViewStation's memory
is reported in three places:
-- the header bar of Setup Mode
-- in the Console window with
the "hwconfig" command
-- with the ViewStation's Available Memory
client (started in Setup Mode)
The Available Memory client
reports the installed memory and also monitors your memory usage
continually as you work. It also reports the number of memory fragments
and the size of the largest available fragment at any given time (get
focus in the Available Memory client window and press "f" to show these
fragmentation values). Click here for more information about the Available Memory Client.
