This page discusses configuration options specific
to the IBM RS6000 environment.
IBM RS6000 Systems Overview
IBM has a line of workstations called the RS6000 series
with its own UNIX operat ing system, AIX. This discussion describes
features of AIX 3.2.5, which uses the X11R5 release of X.
Configuration of the IBM RS6000 is greatly simplified with the
AIX 3.2.5 release, which includes the "SMIT" utility (System Management
Interface Tool).
There is very little special attention needed for connecting
ViewStations.
TFTP File Transfer Protocol
The IBM RS6000 does not start TFTP in its default
configuration. It is easy to start the TFTP protocol with the SMIT
tool. If you use the fast path mechanism with the SMIT tool, this is
very simple.
Type: smit inetd.conf
This points the tool to the inet daemon configuration
file and gives you a menu for the daemon's processes, (list, add,
change, and delete). If you "list" the processes, you will see that TFTP
is absent. Using the "add" command, you can click on TFTP and SMIT adds
it to the running daemon processes.
The TFTP daemon does not run in secure mode by default, so it
is ready to load the ViewStation's files from any directory.
IBM RS6000 Fonts
The IBM RS6000 does use some special IBM fonts, roman and bold.
These are available in the RS6000's /usr/lib/X11/fonts directory as
.pcf fonts. Since the ViewStation can read the .pcf fonts directly, all
you need to do is insure that this directory is in your fontpath.
If you are using the font server on the RS6000, this step is not
necessary.
RSH Permissions on the RS6000
If you are using the ViewStation's local window managers, you
will need to check the name service and the permissions to be sure the
Rsh process works correctly. Verify that the ViewStation's name is
entered correctly in the /etc/hosts file. Verify that the permissions
in the /etc/hosts.equiv file are appropriate for the View Station.
Normally, this file has an entry: + +
indicating
"+" for the host and also "+" for the user, which means that any host
and any user has permission. You may want to modify those settings, but
be sure that the ViewStation has permissions for the appropriate hosts.
Starting Xdm on the RS6000
The RS6000 doesn't start Xdm in its default configuration. The
Xdmcp client is located in /usr/bin/X11/xdm. There is an auto-start
program in that directory. Simply move to the xdm directory and type:
xdm.conf
This starts the Xdm process.
The configuration files are
all appropriate for Xdm operation, though you may want some
customizations. Typing xdm.conf -d removes the Xdm process. There is a
man page called xdm conf.man.
