NAME
HDS Chooser - XDMCP host menu

SYNOPSIS
Chooser is only available by setting run local chooser to yes in the XDMCP options in Setup Mode when the xdmcp access mode is broadcast or indirect.

DESCRIPTION
The HDS Chooser program presents a list of all hosts which are willing to manage the session. The user may connect to any of the hosts presented by selecting the host and pressing the Connect button. A host may be selected via the mouse or by typing the desired selection into the selection box. If a host is typed into the selection box which is not listed, pressing the Connect button will result in a warning beep and the connection will not be attempted.

The list will grow as any new hosts respond that they are willing to manage. The chooser will send out the request with an exponential backoff algorithm so that there will be no network traffic when the chooser is up and the display is idle. The retransmissions start at 2 seconds and back off by factors of 2 to 32 seconds and discontinue after 126 seconds. The transmissions will restart after any keyboard or mouse activity.

The user may also press the Refresh button to discard the current list of willing hosts and begin collecting again. The refresh button is most useful when returning to a display that has been idle for some time. Since the list was compiled over time a host which in the past was willing to manage may no longer be. While the user will be informed of any new hosts that are willing to manage the moment the mouse is touched, hosts which are no longer willing are never removed from the list. By discarding the list and starting again with the refresh button, the list will be made current.

If a host is chosen that is no longer willing or is no longer on the network, the chooser will restart. There could be a 126 second delay before the chooser is run if the host was removed from the network.

Unlike the chooser provided with X11 Release 5 this chooser can work both with X11R4 xdm and X11R5 xdm hosts since it does not work via a forwarded request.

WIDGETS
In order to specify resources, it is useful to know the hierarchy of the widgets which compose HDS Chooser. In the notation below, indentation indicates hierarchical structure. The widget class name is given first, followed by the widget instance name.
