This page describes operating ViewStations with 4 MB of memory.
Server Code Versions
ViewStations with 4 MB of memory do not
have sufficient memory to use the ViewStation's server code with
downloadable clients, such as HDSterm and window managers. They should
use the ./hds-fx/image/Vnn.hds server code versions (not the
Vnn-D.hds versions, the -D designates downloadable versions).
This
version of server code is a fully functional server and uses a "tty
telnet" client for logging onto a host. This telnet session is an X
client but does not have all the VT320 terminal emulation features of
HDSterm.
ViewStation Local Clients
Using
ViewStations without local clients means that some processes, like the
window managers, will have to run on the host computer. Simply start the
window manager on the host and export the display to the ViewStation's
IP address. This is also true of any other clients, such as clocks and
calculators, that you might normally run as local ViewStation clients.
The ViewStation with 4 MB of memory still has some local clients
for internal functions, such as the Console window and the Available
memory client, that are useful for ViewStation operation.
Memory Upgrades
You can upgrade the memory
on any ViewStation to give you the additional functionality and benefits
of ViewStation local clients.
