This page discusses the Ethernet Hardware Address.
Network
Addressing
Each device using network communications has a unique, permanent
hardware address, a 48-bit number assigned at the time of its
manufacture. This is called the Ethernet address. For the ViewStation
this number is assigned by HDS for each unit. (This hardware address is
shown on the boot screen, with the "hwconfig" command in the Console
window, and on a label on the back panel). This is an identification
for the ViewStation that other devices use in network communications.
The ViewStation's hardware address is also part of its Serial
Number.

If you use the BOOTP protocol or the RARP protocol to set your IP address, you will need this hardware
address. If you use other methods to set the IP address, you probably
won't need this address.
