This page discusses ways to use the TFTP file
transfer protocol with the ViewStation. It is the ViewStation's default
protocol.
When the ViewStation needs a file, such as its
server code file or a font file, it sends a TFTP request to the host
computer to transfer the file. It specifies the host IP address and path
to the file based on your paths and entries in "HDSware" in Setup Mode.
Starting TFTP
Verify that TFTP
is running on your host computer. Some host systems don't start TFTP.
Refer also to the individual host pages below.
Check your
paths and permissions
If you have a problem with loading a file,
check the file path; make sure you don't have a typing error and make
sure the file is actually where you think it is.
The second
problem is file permissions. Make sure the file is world-readable so the
TFTP process can load it.
TFTP Error Messages
These
are common error messages you see with TFTP file load failures. They can
help you locate the source of your problems. (Press the Print-Scrn key
at the beginning of the boot process to give you more error messages.)
-- "TFTP: Timed Out:" - this usually means TFTP is not running on
your host computer.
-- "TFTP: Error code 1: File not found" - this usually means there
is an error in the entry or the file is not in the secure directory.
-- "TFTP: Error code 2, Access violation" - this usually indicates
problems with permissions, or TFTP secure mode access to /tftpboot.
-- "TFTP : File not found." - this usually indicates an incorrect
file location.
TFTP Secure Mode
Many systems use TFTP in Secure Mode. This means that there is a
"secure" directory (which is usually specified on the TFTP startup line)
and that any TFTP request looks only in that directory for the file.
TFTP does a "change_root" to the secure directory, so you must take that
into account when you specify your path. If your operating system
permits, you can sometimes create a link from the secure directory to
another directory. There are suggestions based on each host
configuration in the pages below.
