Chapter 1 - Maintenance Update Overview

SunSoft supplies Maintenance Updates to provide you with bug fixes and new
hardware support between releases of the INTERACTIVE UNIX System (IUS).
The bug fixes and hardware support in this Maintenance Update apply only to
Version 4.1 of IUS. This update also consolidates all previously released
patches for Version 4.1, so no individual patches need to be downloaded (see
Appendix B, "Patches Included in This Maintenance Update").

If you have a previous version of the product and need the features or drivers
provided with this Maintenance Update, first update your operating system to
the latest revision of IUS, Version 4.1, using update package ISUP-XXX-FP3.

This Maintenance Update can be obtained electronically, via CompuServe, the
World Wide Web, or anonymous FTP. If you don't have access to the Internet,
the Maintenance Update is also available on diskettes (IMNT-410-FP3). See
Appendix C, "Obtaining Maintenance Updates and Information
Electronically," for details on how to obtain the Maintenance Update.

This is the only Maintenance Update for Version 4.1 of IUS. There will be more
drivers and software corrections in the future, but those will be consolidated
into the next release of the INTERACTIVE UNIX System, Version 4.1.1. With
Version 4.1.1, to be released in the spring of 1996, the newest drivers and the
latest revision of the product will be available in one package to all new
customers.

In terms of hardware support, SunSoft is focused on adding or updating drivers
for disk controllers and network interface cards. However, the graphical
subsystem (INTERACTIVE X11) has not been updated and no new video support has
been added. Several third-party suppliers offer fast X server packages for IUS
which support a broad range of up-to-date video adapters. One such vendor is
X Inside ((303) 298-7478). Several key customers are now using IUS with such a
third-party package and are quite satisfied with it.

These release notes supplement the Version 4.1 release notes and describe only
the differences between Version 4.1 and this Maintenance Update.

The Maintenance Update consists of six diskettes:

o A new Boot/Install diskette
o Boot-Loadable Drivers
o Core / Kernel Configuration / Basic Networking
o Network Drivers
o TCP/IP Update
o lpr / NFS / VP/ix / SDS / Streams

The 4.1 Maintenance Update includes these new features. For detailed
information about new features, updated drivers, and software corrections, see
Chapter 5, "Software Corrections and New Features."

o IDE fixed disks greater than 528 Mbytes are now supported.

o A new autoconfiguration feature enhances configuration and installation
(see Chapter 3, "New Autoconfiguration Feature").

o The Intel(R) Express ECC Memory Module driver is included.

o New and updated fixed disk and network drivers are included. See
Chapter 4, "New and Updated Device Drivers."

Chapter 2 - Installation

This chapter describes how to install the 4.1 Maintenance Update on an
existing system as well as on a new system.

Note - See Chapter 3, "New Autoconfiguration Feature," for information about
the new Autoconfigure HPDD option.

System Requirements

The Maintenance Update is only available on 3.5-inch diskettes. To install the
Maintenance Update on a *new* system, the system's primary (boot) drive must be
3.5-inch. If the system has a 3.5-inch drive, but it isn't the primary drive,
you may be able to change primary drives using your system's BIOS setup
program. Other systems may require manually changing the diskette drive cables.

Updating Existing Systems

The following steps outline how to install the Maintenance Update on a system
running Version 4.1 of the INTERACTIVE UNIX System. Earlier versions must
be updated to 4.1 before this Maintenance Update can be installed.

Caution! - Do not use the Maintenance Update Boot/Install diskette while
updating your system.

1. Become root and put the system at run level 2 or single-user mode.

To change to run level 2, type:

    # init 2

2. Use sysadm to install the Core / Kernel Configuration / Basic Networking
    Maintenance Update diskette:

    # sysadm installpkg

3. Install other Maintenance Update diskettes if required.

See Chapter 5, "Software Corrections and New Features," for a list of
software corrections. If you're unsure about what packages to install, you
can install all of them and ignore any error messages that may appear.

4. If your disk controller is one of AHA-274x, AHA-284x, AHA-294x, AMD974,
DPT, NCR710, or NCR810, install the Boot-Loadable Drivers diskette.

5. Start kconfig.

If you have installed a new or updated disk driver, you must reconfigure
the HPDD manually. To do so, choose HPDD from the Configure menu. Then
    choose Reconfigure HPDD.

6. Choose Build from the kconfig menu bar, then choose Install.

The autoconfiguration feature will not work until the new kernel has been
    rebooted.

Installing the Maintenance Update on New Systems

To install the Maintenance Update on a system that doesn't already have the
INTERACTIVE UNIX System installed, follow the instructions in Installation
Guide, incorporating the following changes.

Note - You still need the standard distribution (diskette or tape) of
INTERACTIVE UNIX System Version 4.1 to install the Maintenance Update
on a new system.

Caution! - The DPT PM-2021 controller may cause the installation of the
INTERACTIVE UNIX Operating System to fail due to loss of interrupts, depending
on the setting of Jumper Y34. If the software installation fails, try changing
the setting of Jumper Y34 (even if the on-board diskette controller has already
been disabled by removing Jumper Y20). Toggling this setting appears to enable
the controller to function correctly.

1. Boot the system using the Maintenance Update Boot diskette.

2. Install the Boot-Loadable Drivers diskette.

    If your system has an AHA-274x, AHA-284x, AHA-294x, AMD974, DPT, NCR710, or
NCR810 disk controller, use the Maintenance Update Boot-Loadable Drivers
diskette, *not* the standard INTERACTIVE UNIX System Version 4.1
    Boot-Loadable Drivers diskette.

3. Install the INTERACTIVE UNIX System Version 4.1 Core diskettes.

If you select EXIT after Core installation completes, the autoconfiguration
software prompts you for the other packages required for a minimal
INTERACTIVE UNIX System 4.1 Maintenance Update system and will then
autoconfigure and install a new kernel. All supported SCSI devices on the
boot controller will be autoconfigured. If you do this, you will *not* have
the option of adding any other packages until the system reboots. If you
take this path, you will be automatically prompted to follow steps 4, 6, 7,
    and 8.

4. Install the INTERACTIVE UNIX System Version 4.1 File Management
    and Kernel Configuration diskettes.

5. Install any other desired diskettes.

6. Install the Maintenance Update diskettes that correspond to the diskettes
    you installed in step 5.

For example, if you installed the INTERACTIVE TCP/IP diskettes, install
the Maintenance Update INTERACTIVE TCP/IP diskette.

7. Install the Maintenance Update Core and Kernel Configuration diskette.

8. If your system uses a driver on the Boot-Loadable Drivers diskette (see
step 2), install that diskette (again).

9. Run kconfig and build and install a new kernel.

Chapter 3 - New Autoconfiguration Feature

A new option, Autoconfigure HPDD, is included in the 4.1 Maintenance
Update. Installed when the kc (Kernel Configuration) update package is added to
a system, it enables a system administrator to configure a system's fixed disk
controller and attached devices automatically, without having to enter values
in High Performance Device Driver (HPDD) configuration forms.

HPDD Background

The HPDD is a kernel subsystem that acts as an interface between fixed disk
controller hardware and peripherals and the kernel. Fixed disk controller
drivers are divided into two classes: built-in and boot-loadable.

o Built-in drivers are automatically configured into the HPDD (though not all
devices connected to controller cards using these drivers are automatically
recognized and thus recognized by the kernel that resides on the Boot/Install
diskette). The built-in drivers are Adaptec AHA-1540 and ATHD, which supports
the IDE, ESDI, MFM, and RLL formats.

o Boot-loadable drivers are not in the HPDD by default, but they are loaded
during the boot procedure if no primary controller is found that is drivable
by a built-in controller. Afterwards, they must be installed as a package,
and a kernel must be specifically built to include the boot-loadable driver
  or the system won't boot.

While most useful during a new installation, Autoconfigure HPDD can also be
used when adding new devices to controllers that have already been configured.

Using Autoconfigure HPDD

To use Autoconfigure HPDD:

1. Become root and run kconfig.

2. Select Configure from the menu bar, HPDD from the pull-down menu,
    and then Autoconfigure HPDD.

If you are installing a new system with the Maintenance Update diskettes, you
will specifically be warned if you try to exit the installation without having
configured, built, and installed a new kernel supporting your primary fixed
disk controller, whether it is built-in or boot-loadable. You will be given the
options of returning to the installation menu, exiting anyway (despite the
consequences), or allowing the installation procedure to automatically
configure, build, and install a new kernel, exit the installation, and reboot.

If you are adding new devices to an already configured HPDD driver or if an
HPDD boot-loadable driver successfully loads, Autoconfigure HPDD determines
what devices (including disks, tapes, CD-ROMs, WORMs, or a combination of them)
are attached to your controller, as well as their related interrupts,
addresses, and targets. It won't determine what disk or tape controller is
installed in your system or, in turn, what HPDD driver needs to be configured.

Since all devices attached to an already configured HPDD driver are
automatically configured, if a CD-ROM device is found, it will be configured.
However, to be able to mount a High Sierra file system CD-ROM, you must
configure the High Sierra file system and build a new kernel.

Chapter 5 - Software Corrections and New Features

Miscellaneous Fixes and Enhancements

Fixes

o A root password eight characters long is now recognized when entering
  System Maintenance mode.

o Problems using Exabyte 4mm (DAT) tape drives have been fixed.

o csh(1) now uses sysconf(2P) to determine the maximum argument list
size when running commands with many arguments specified.

o The system now correctly recognizes Multiuser System serial numbers.

Enhancements

o 1024 TCP sockets (type SOCK_STREAM) and 1024 UDP sockets (type SOCK_DGRAM)
can now be open simultaneously system-wide as opposed to the former
limitation of 256. Binaries built with prior versions of libinet.a will
continue to work but are restricted to the 256 socket limitation. All clients
and daemons that are normally distributed as part of the hbtcp package have
been reissued in the Maintenance Update with the expanded socket limit.

o The Post Office Protocol (pop3) mail protocol is now supported; it's used by
PC-NFS mail, for example. To use pop3, adding the following line to
  /etc/inetd.conf:

pop3 stream tcp nowait root /etc/popper popper

o The last time a user logged in can now be recorded in a file called
/usr/adm/lastlog. The finger(1) command displays this information.
To enable this feature, become root and create an empty file with the path
/usr/adm/lastlog. The file should have only read permission for group and
other. The file /usr/include/lastlog.h contains information about the format
  of lastlog.

o A system can be configured to not have a swap device. To do this, change the
line in /etc/conf/cf.d/sassign beginning with swap to swap nodev.

o IDE fixed disks greater than 528 Mbytes are now supported.

o When the gramd RAM disk driver is configured into the system, its size can be
overridden at boot time by pressing the Space key at the "Booting the
INTERACTIVE UNIX Operating System" message, then typing /unix ramd=NNNk,
where NNN is the number of kilobytes of RAM to use (or specify ramd=0 for no
RAM disk). This is useful if system memory size has been reduced or if the
RAM disk size is accidentally misconfigured.

o Interrupt handling in the diskette device driver has been improved, resulting
in faster read and write transfers.

Kernel Fixes

o Sockets with SO_LINGER set now flush pending data when closing, instead of
  hanging in close(2).

o The -d <dma-channel> option of idcheck(1M) now functions correctly.

o idmknod(1M) prints the correct usage information.

o When using sh(1) or rsh(1), multiple processes can append to the same file
using >> without risk of losing partial data.

o A bug in the interrupt priority level handling code, which resulted in slow
fixed disk performance and poor interactive "feel," has been corrected.

o asy devices no longer hang after modem carrier loss.

o getty(1M) now treats the device name in /etc/utmp in the same way as init(1M)
and login(1) do. Also, the -X option now works correctly.

o The iBCS-2 version of the waitpid system call is properly recognized.

o The floating-point emulator can properly receive signals during a page fault.

o ct(1C) properly closes extraneous files before starting the login process. It
also correctly logs each call to the log file /usr/adm/ctlog.

o poll(2) and select(3I) don't unnecessarily return EAGAIN when testing streams
devices. Note that EAGAIN is still a valid return from these calls.

o The osm driver now supports the poll(2) system call. As a result, the
syslogd(1M) program now logs kernel messages to /usr/adm/messages in a more
  timely fashion.

Networking Fixes

o NFS now supports the "cd .." and move directory operations.

o The tcp driver now correctly allows a program using the TLI interface to set
  the TCP_NODELAY socket option.

o /etc/inetd no longer experiences a 10-minute delay at startup when RPC host
  services are not started.

o whois(1C) uses the current Internet whois server.

o Correct system accounting information is written to the /etc/wtmp records
when a user exits from a system accessed with rlogin(1C) or telnet(1C).

o ntpd(1M) no longer issues error messages about being unable to find kernel
  variables.

o The ntpd server is started automatically during system initialization if the
  configuration file exists.

o Second (sl2) and third (sl3) SLIP devices can be added.

o Client and server TLI sockets are bound to separate port numbers, rather than
the same one. This problem would sometimes cause a popular database program
  to crash.

o The uucico(1M) program has been fixed to create directories with the correct
permissions, fixing failures that displayed the message "CAN'T CREATE
  <dirname>."

o man: The -d option (search current directory) now works correctly. Also man
now displays all matches for the manual page requested when the same name is
used for manual pages in different sections.

o mailx: The -f <filename> option works correctly.

o find: The -ls option properly displays a symbolic link's target name.

o sed: The w command now works correctly. This also fixes problems with
  dircmp(1).

o vi: vi(1), ex(1), and view(1) no longer hang when editing files with long
  path names.

o who: who(1) can now display utmp(4) entries with long ut_id fields (the
  /etc/inittab ID).

o setcolor: The program now works correctly when TERM is set to xpcterm or
  AT8859.

o lpd: The program works around a known problem with HP JetDirect controllers
  receiving zero-length data files.

o doscopy: These DOS commands now accept C: as the drive specifier:
  o doscopy
  o dosdir
  o doserase
  o dosformat
  o dosget
  o dosmkdir
  o dosput
  o dosrename
  o dosrmdir
  o dossette
  o dostype

o system accounting: Limits on the total number of users have been removed from
the system accounting programs, eliminating the message "INCREASE SIZE OF
  MAXUSERS."

Enhancements

o ping: The command now shows the IP address of the host when the host is
  specified by name.

o fsck: The fsck(1M) utility now uses FASTFS free block bitmaps by default on
S51K/S5L file systems instead of System V free lists.

If fsck has to rebuild the free list of a S51K or S5L file system, it will by
default build a FASTFS free block bitmap. If a file system was unmounted with
state FsMAPOKAY, the bitmap will be read and checked. If a free list needs
rebuilding for any reason and the file system is S51K/S5L, a bitmap will be
built instead of a free list. The -m flag disables this behavior. If the file
system was unmounted cleanly with a free list (state FsOKAY), it will be left
untouched, although this can be overridden using the -s flag. The mount
commands for both the S51K and S5L file systems have been updated to use the
FASTFS free block bitmaps when necessary.

VP/ix Fixes

o The VP/ix(TM) command redir now works with DOS Version 5 and later without
requiring setver to be run first. To use the updated command, copy the file
/usr/vpix/dosbin/redir.exe to your personal C: directory.

o The VP/ix command dosmount properly interprets environment variables. To use
the updated command, copy /usr/vpix/dosbin/dosmount.exe to your personal C:
  directory.

Note - The fix for these commands will only install if you already have a copy
of VP/ix installed.

Software Development System Fixes and Enhancements

Fixes

o ctags(1) correctly processes escaped newlines.

o libcurses ignores function key input, rather than interpreting it as text.

o A labs function for returning the absolute value of a long int argument has
been added to the C library. See abs(3C) for details.

o The version of crypt in libcposix.a was unnecessary and conflicted with the
version in libc.a. It has been removed from libcposix.a.

o The mb* group of functions (mblen(), mbstowcs(), and mbtowc()) and the wc*
group (wcstombs() and wctomb()) are now provided for compatibility with code
expecting these functions. Note that the size of wchar_t is 1, and MB_LEN_MAX
is 1. True multibyte and wide characters are not supported.

o The ANSI C atexit functionality is now implemented in the C libraries.

Enhancements

o The assembler, as(1), now supports the invd, wbinvd, and cpuid instructions.

o Limits on the number of -D and -U options for the C preprocessor, cpp(1),
  have been removed.
