The LABEL command is used to create, change, or delete the volume label (name) of a disk. The volume label of a disk is displayed as part of the directory listing along with the volume serial number, it it exists.
Syntax:
LABEL [drive:][label]
| drive: | The location of the disk to be named. |
| label | The new volume label. |
| none | Displays current disk label, if they exist. Prompts to enter a new label or delete the existing one. |
Notes:
- If label is not specified, the following prompt is displayed:
C:\WINDOWS>Label
Volume in drive A is xxxxxxxxxxx
Volume Serial Number is xxxx-xxxx
Volume label (11 characters, ENTER for none)? |
- A volume label can contain up to 11 characters and can include spaces but not:
* ? / \ | . , ; : + = [ ] ( ) & ^ < > "
- Volume labels are displayed in uppercase letters only.
- LABEL does not work with a virtual drive created with the SUBST command.
