Some or all of the images offered for this product are in ISO format, which is
an image of a CD-ROM, DVD, or USB Flash drive. Once downloaded, these images
can be burned directly to media.

When downloading the images with Download Director, note the name of the file
saved. While most files have descriptive names, a few may not and once
downloaded it may not be obvious from the name of the file which product
image it contains. If this is the case for one or more of the files you are
downloading, it is recommended that you immediately rename the file to a
more descriptive name after the download is complete.

Burning media on AIX Systems

If you have a CD/DVD burner attached to your AIX system, you can use the
cdrecord command to create your media. The cdrecord command can be found on
the AIX Toolbox for Linux applications media or at the following website,
https://www-03.ibm.com/systems/power/software/aix/linux/.

Burning CD/DVD media on Personal Computers

If you have a CD/DVD burner attached to your PC or laptop, there are a variety
of software products available for burning CDs. Be sure to use the option to
'Create a disk from an image already on your hard drive' (or something similar)
and not the 'Create a data disk' option. Many software products require that
the name of the file that you want to burn end with a '.iso'.

Using the PowerVM VIOS Virtual Optical Library

The ISO image can be loaded into a virtual optical library on a
PowerVM Virtual I/O Server instance. Simply copy the file to a directory
on the VIO Server, for instance-- /home/padmin/aix_7100-04-04.v1.iso, and
the use the following commands to first load it into the library and then
load it into a virtual optical drive.

$ mkvopt -name aix_7100-04-04.v1 -file /home/padmin/aix_7100-04-04.v1.iso -ro
$ loadopt -disk aix_7100-04-04.v1 -vtd lpar21_dvd0

Creating USB flash memory install media

The ISO image can be written to a USB flash memory stick which can then be
used as installation media on Power 8 and later systems. Beginning with
AIX Version 7.1 Technology Level 5 and AIX 7.2 Technology level 2, a single
volume image is made available for writing to USB flash memory. The minimum
capacity of the USB flash memory stick should be 16GB. On an AIX and Linux
based system, the ISO image can be written to a USB flash memory stick using
the dd command:

$dd if=/tmp/AIX_V7.2_Base_Install_7200-02-00_flash_102017.iso of=/dev/usbms0 bs=4k

Comparable commands exist on Windows based machines for writing the ISO image
to a USB flash memory stick.
