DMI 2.0 Instrumentation Enhancements for Windows NT 4.0 and above

Introduction
============
The Desktop Management Interface allows desktop and server computers,
hardware and software products, and peripherals - whether they are
stand alone systems or linked into networks - to be manageable and intelligent.
It allows them to communicate their system resource requirements and to coexist
in a manageable PC and server environment.

Installation
============
The Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS 4.x) was developed by Microsoft
to offer a standard driver interface for adapter cards. AMD's NDIS 4.x driver
supports the following environments:
   Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Microsoft Windows 95 OSR2 and above (Memphis, etc.)
   Installation details for AMD' s NDIS 4.x driver are described below.

Support is provided for Microsoft Window NT (Version 4.0) environment.
Notes:
  1. The directory structure that is provided on the AMD NDIX 4.x driver diskette
     has been set up for automatic OEM installation. Also, more information can be
     found in the Microsoft Windows NT User's Guide.
  2. Only x86-based Windows NT platforms are supported.
  3. When the driver is installed, the DMI instrumentation also gets automatically installed.

Follow the steps listed below:

  1. Insert the AMD NDIS 4.x driver diskette into the floppy drive.
  2. From the Control Panel in the Windows NT Main window,
     double click on the Network icon to install the PCnet adapter card.
  3. From the Network Settings dialog box, choose Adapter and click Add.
  4. From the Select Network Adapter dialog box, click Have Disk button.
  5. From the Insert Disk window, enter:
       A:\pcnet\winnt_mini4 if you are installing the NDIS4 Miniport driver or
       A:\pcnet\winnt_ps4 if you are installing the NDIS4 Miniport PermaNet driver
  6. On completion of the installation, the user will be prompted to
     shut down the system. When the system comes up again,
     the network should be up and running.
  7. The experienced user can choose the Advanced button in the Network Control Panel
     settings and set the appropriate parameters.

Viewing DMI Information
=======================
In order to view the DMI instrumented attributes, it is necessary to install
the Intel DMI SDK and Intel's DMI Explorer (available at www.dmtf.org).

After installing them, launch the DMI Explorer program. Now in the DMI Explorer window,
double on the MyComputer icon. You will see the item AMD PCnet Ethernet Controller
Component. Expanding this item will show the 19 groups under it. You can examine
the attributes and their corresponding values by expanding the group you interested in.
If you are running the PermaNet Server Software driver and you have configured 2 adapters
as a pair, you will see an alert message (DMI indication) each time the primary NIC fails
or recovers. This can be demonstrated by causing a link failure on the primary NIC
by pulling the Primary adapter's cable.

Notes:
In order to receive DMI indications, it is necessary to use a management application
that can subscribe to receive alert messages, such as IBM's Fault Tolerant Management
Interface. As of date, the DMI Explorer cannot subscribe to receive DMI indications.

Upgrading from non fail-over driver to fail-over (PermaNet Server and Fast EtherChannel)
driver: In DMI Explorer, the user will need to delete the AMD component before installing
the fail-over driver.
