SCO VisionFS 1.13
------------------------------------------------------------------------

This README file contains important information about this release,
and gives instructions for installing and setting up the software.

Please read carefully.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Setting up VisionFS
------------------------------------------------------------------------

You use VisionFS Setup to install and set up VisionFS on your UNIX
system.

VisionFS Setup has two stages: installing files, and configuring the
VisionFS server and your system to work together, in the way that you
want.

Setup will suggest the best way to install and set up VisionFS. Before
it makes any changes to your system, you'll be able to review Setup's
suggestions, and choose a custom installation if you want to change
any of them.

See also "What you'll need to know", later in this README.

Once VisionFS is installed, set up and running, you need to log into a
PC as the VisionFS Administrator, and use the Profile Editor to
configure the server.

Make sure you read the README in the VisionFS installation directory.
It contains instructions for finding and starting the Profile Editor,
and may contain last-minute information that couldn't make it into the
printed documentation.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
To install and set up SCO VisionFS 1.13 from the CD
------------------------------------------------------------------------

1 Log in as root on the UNIX server.

2 Mount the CD. Refer to your UNIX documentation if you do not
know how to mount a CD. Some systems will mount the CD automatically.

3 Change to the CD directory. For example, if your CD is mounted
   on /cdrom, type:

   cd /cdrom

4 Run the setup script on the VisionFS CD. Type:

   ./setup

On some systems (for example, HP-UX) filenames are displayed
in UPPER CASE, followed by ';1'. In this case, type ./SETUP\;1

5 Follow the instructions on your screen.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you've downloaded SCO VisionFS 1.13
------------------------------------------------------------------------

1 Log in as root on the UNIX server.

2 Change to the directory in which you expanded the VisionFS
tar file (the one containing this README). For example, if
this README is in /tmp/vfs, type:

   cd /tmp/vfs

3 Run the setup script. Type:

   ./setup

4 Follow the instructions on your screen.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
What you'll need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------

This section gives more information about the installation and
configuration settings that VisionFS Setup uses to get VisionFS up and
running.

IMPORTANT: You should read this section whether you accept Setup's
suggested settings or choose a custom installation.

Installation stage

 - Shared directory
Programs and data files, shared between more than one member of
the Vision family. Defaults to /usr/local/vision.

 - Main installation directory
Programs and data files that belong to a particular version of
VisionFS. This directory can be on a read-only filesystem.
Defaults to visionfs in the Vision family shared directory.

 - Configuration directory
Configuration files for VisionFS. This directory must be writable
only by root. Defaults to vfsprofile in the Vision family
     shared directory.

 - Data directory
Log files, printer spool files and print queue information.
Depending on your server's load, this directory may take up
significant amounts of disk space. Defaults to vfsdata in the
     Vision family shared directory.

VisionFS Setup will create directories that don't exist, and give
them the appropriate permissions.

Configuration stage

 - Administrator
The UNIX username of the only user allowed to configure the
VisionFS server, using the Profile Editor. See below.

 - Server name
The VisionFS server's name on the network, which Windows PCs
     use to access the server.

 - Workgroup
The Windows workgroup (collection of computers) in which to
place the VisionFS server. The workgroup must already exist.
If it doesn't, you can still connect to the server by name,
but you won't be able to see the server in Network Neighborhood
or the Connect Network Drive Dialog.

 - Start on reboot, Run level
Whether the VisionFS server starts automatically when the UNIX
server reboots, and at which point during the reboot process
     it starts.

 - Start now
Whether to start the VisionFS server immediately after Setup
     finishes.

 - Checkpoint every Sunday, Checkpoint time
Whether to automatically produce statistical information and
archive log files every Sunday, and at what time.

You can change the first three settings at any time, using the
Profile Editor. You can change the Start On Reboot and Checkpoint
settings later by rerunning VisionFS Setup.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
About the VisionFS Administrator
------------------------------------------------------------------------

The VisionFS Administrator is a special UNIX user, with sole
responsibility for configuring the VisionFS server. You can make any
UNIX user the VisionFS Administrator, but choose carefully.

The VisionFS Administrator is:

 - As powerful as the UNIX superuser

 - The only user allowed to run the Profile Editor

You'll need to log into Windows using the VisionFS Administrator's
username to run the Profile Editor. If you use Windows regularly,
don't use a special username like "administrator" or "root" as the
VisionFS Administrator. Otherwise, you'll have to log out and log in
again as the Administrator to run the Profile Editor.

IMPORTANT: The Administrator's UNIX password is as important as the
superuser's. Keep it secure.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you're using an earlier version of SCO VisionFS
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Running SCO VisionFS Setup will automatically update the earlier
version and upgrade your profile, preserving your settings where
possible.

You don't need to stop or uninstall the earlier version before running
VisionFS Setup.
