Installation Instructions for Linux Mbone Tools
===============================================

Requirements
------------

Debian GNU/Linux 1.3.x on an Intel-based PC.
	- Other distributions, such as Red Hat, are not supported
BT848 based framegrabber
	- Optional, but needed to transmit video
Sound card
	- Optional, but needed to transmit/receive audio

The files in the binary subdirectory are required for installation. The
files in the source directory are optional, but may be of interest to
developers.

Installation
------------

Installation of these tools should only be attempted by a knowledgeable
system administrator.

1) Log in as root.
2) Download the files in the binary subdirectory:
bttv_0.4.3-1_i386.deb Kernel module for framegrabber support
	nte_1.5a23-1_i386.deb Network Text Editor
	rat_3.0.23_i386.deb Robust-Audio Tool
	sdr_2.4a6n-1_i386.deb Session Directory
	vic_2.8-1_i386.deb Video Conferencing Tools
	wb-1.59.deb Shared Whiteboard
3) Install media tools:
	dpkg -i nte_1.5a23-1_i386.deb
	dpkg -i rat_3.0.23_i386.deb
	dpkg -i sdr_2.4a6n-1_i386.deb
	dpkg -i vic_2.8-1_i386.deb
	dpkg -i wb-1.59.deb
4) If you have a BT848 based framegrabber, and wish to transmit video,
    install the framegrabber driver:
	dpkg -i bttv_0.4.3-1_i386.deb
It is necessary to reboot to load the module.

This should write status information to /var/log/messages, for example:
Dec 1 16:06:07 eucharisto kernel: bttv: Host bridge: 82441FX Natoma, bufcon=0x8f
Dec 1 16:06:07 eucharisto kernel: bttv: Brooktree Bt848 (revision 17)
	Dec 1 16:06:07 eucharisto kernel: bttv: bus: 0, devfn: 80, irq: 11, memory: 0xfedfb000.
Dec 1 16:06:07 eucharisto kernel: bttv: latency: 0x84
	Dec 1 16:06:07 eucharisto kernel: bttv: 1 Bt848 card(s) found.
	Dec 1 16:06:07 eucharisto kernel: bttv: bt848_mem: 0x04830000
Dec 1 16:06:07 eucharisto kernel: bttv: GPIO: 0x00fffffb
Dec 1 16:06:07 eucharisto kernel: bttv: model: HAUPPAUGE (Temic PAL @ 0xc2)
Dec 1 16:06:15 eucharisto kernel: bttv: PCI display adapter: Matrox Millennium.
	Dec 1 16:06:15 eucharisto kernel: bttv: memory @ 0xfe000000, devfn: 0x0030.
The exact message will vary, depending on the particular framegrabber
    you have installed.

The kernel device driver is very dependent on the kernel version you
use. It should work with the standard 2.0.29 kernel supplied with
Debian, but if that kernel is recompiled with very different options
or if a different kernel is used, the binary framegrabber module may
fail to load. In this case, you must rebuild this module from the
    source code supplied.

5) Test the tools. Note that the standard Debian kernel does not ship with
IP multicast support enabled, hence restricting the tools to use in
point to point mode. To enable multiuser support in the tools, it is
necessary to rebuild the kernel with IP multicast support (see the
Kernel-HOWTO supplied with your distribution for details).

===============================================================================
If necessary, the framegrabber kernel module can be rebuilt from source as
follows:
a) Download the BT848 framegrabber module source code
	bttv_0.4.3-1.diff.gz
	bttv_0.4.3-1.dsc
	bttv_0.4.3-1_i386.changes
	bttv_0.4.3.orig.tar.gz
b) Unpack the source code
	dpkg-source -x bttv_0.4.3-1.dsc
c) Build and install the framegrabber
	cd bttv-0.4.3
	make bttv.o
	make ins
Note that this has NOT been tested on kernel releases other than 2.0.32,
and may not be reliable.

===============================================================================
Other source code packages may be extracted with the command:
	dpkg-source -x *.dsc
Note that Tcl/Tk source is required to built nte.

===============================================================================
Video framegrabber support is experimental in Linux v2.0 and some problems
may be experienced if transmitting for long periods of time. It is expected
that this will be solved with the release of Linux v2.2, at which point
this package will need updating.

Audio performance is very dependent on your soundcard and driver version.
If you experience problems, try upgrading the kernel sound driver and/or
using the commercial OSS/Linux driver system. If possible, try a different
make of soundcard.
