Defining Optional Attributes

Placing brackets (i.e. []) around an attribute's format definition indicates that the attribute is optional, and may therefore be omitted from an event.

In the example, the message and location attributes are optional. If the attributes are not used, a reference will return the ECDL Void value.

By nesting brackets, optional attributes may themselves contain other optional attributes.
