The Toolbox for your Calamus fonts:

FonTools

for MGL Calamus SL

(from SL99)

***********************************************************************

Installation

1. First make a backup copy of your installation disk. Put it in a safe
place, and use your backup to install FonTools.

2. Read the README.TXT (if one is present) for any information and hints
that may not have been to hand when the manual was printed.

3. Copy the contents of the folders DOCUMENT, INFO and MODULES from the
FonTools disk into the folders of the same name in your Calamus folder.

Tip: Any additional information may be found in the folder <your Calamus
directory>\INFO\MODULE\FONTOOLS

4. Start Calamus SL and choose the menu item "File", "External Modules".

5. Click "Load"", choose "FONTOOLS.CXM" in the file selector box, and click
"OK".

6. The module "invers FonTools" is now installed. If you would like this
module to load automatically each time Calamus SL is started, then you
should save the settings (Menu item "Options", "Save System Settings").

1 General

FonTools will only function with versions of MGI Calamus from SL 99
onwards!

A solution to the problem of keeping track of Calamus typefaces has long
been awaited by users. Now at last here's a way to quickly review existing
typefaces without exiting Calamus or spending a lot of time. Euro characters
and Type 1 typefaces can equally be worked on, as both can be directly
loaded into FonTools.

FonTools functions generally divide into two main groups, one for loaded
and one for needed but not yet loaded fonts.

	Current Fonts
	Font Browser

In the first of the command groups (Current Fonts), already loaded fonts
are dealt with, and in the second (Font Browser), fonts that are not yet
loaded.
Optionally, you can set either or both command groups to open their
respective windows when activated.

	Settings

The third command group provides various possibilities for installation.

	2 Current Fonts

Current fonts belong to the active document. Naturally,if no
documents are loaded then you can load fonts and work on them with
FonTools. These fonts then "belong" to Calamus and not to any document.

2.1 Sort Fonts

This function sorts the currently loaded fonts by font name, file name
or by alphanumerical serial number.

2.2 Shift Font Upward

The selected font is moved upwards in the font window as well as in the
text style module's font list. Global sorts can therefore be further
refined.

2.3 Shift Font Downward

The selected font is moved downward in the font window as well as in the
text style module's font list. Global sorts can therefore be further
refined.

2.4 Pair Kerning Editor

Calamus' own font format (CFN) supports so-called step kerning, with
this 8 different levels of kerning values can be "assigned" to the
character, so that the space each character occupies can be precisely
specified. Calamus fonts (CFN) can also contain pair kerning information,
just like Type 1 PostScript fonts. "Critical" pairs of letters are aligned
by hand, and the kerning information saved in the font.

In the two lists to the left of the dialogue you choose the characters
to kern (e.g. the character pair "Va") using the sliders, and selecting the
characters with a mouse click. Alternatively, you can directly enter the
characters into the input fields. If you do not know how to enter a special
character directly from the keyboard, click on the appropriate
input field with the mouse so that it is active, and call the Calamus
character selector box by pressing Ctrl-Esc on the keyboard. Then you can
click on the desired letter, which will be entered into the input field.
A text example is always shown in the Preview pane, so that you can
immediately see the results of altering pair kerning information. You can
alter the example text in the third command group, but it is quicker to
click in the Preview pane and enter the text directly.
In the pane "Pair Kerning" is the current kerning pair being worked on.
To the right is the current kerning value for this pair (0 = no kerning).
This value can be altered using the arrows. Additionally, there is a memory
store with a memory (just like a pocket calculator).

	-10|-1|current value|+1|+10
Value in memory|Current memory value|Read memory

Additional to pair kerning, which you define for individual characters,
you can specify a general kerning offset using values from 0 to 255.
Negative values are not allowed here.

2.5 Random Change of Font

With this function the appearance of a font can be changed.

There are three ways to quickly give your fonts an unusual appearance,
all have strong resemblances to those created by the well-known
Fontdesigner.

2.5.1 Dancing Letters

Characters are shifted individually more or less randomly upwards or
downwards.

2.5.2 Randomize Character Size

Characters are resized in a random manner.

2.5.3 Random Move Character Coordinates

The control points of the font paths are randomly moved. Thus very
large distortions of the current font can be produced. Be aware that once
produced, the effect can rarely be repeated a second time because of the
random way that the control points are moved. Save the font under a new name
if you want to reuse the effect.

All three effects can be altered in their strengths, and naturally
the effects can be mixed.

In order to work on a font, first select one of the three functions and
choose an intensity level if required. Then click on the button "Execute".
After computation, the result is shown in the Preview pane. To change the
preview text, simply click on the Preview pane. If you aren't content with
the change, then you can restore the original by clicking on the "Undo"
button. Accept the changes by clicking on the "OK" button.

2.6 Insert Euro Character

With this function a Euro character can be inserted into an existing
font, whether it be CFN or PostScript Type 1. You have the agonising choice
of nearly 50 different Euro characters provided in the Berthold Typeface
Collection. In addition (in the first position in the selection list), the
"standard Euro character" appears, whose typographic quality is very
strongly criticised in the specialized media. Nevertheless, it has been
included here.

The Euro character is generally inserted into the chosen font in ASCII
position 238, if you haven't set an alternative position in the text module
(Command group "Tools", "Special Key Bindings", see SL99 handbook). The
current definition is shown as a check for you in the Euro Character
dialog. It makes sense to change this allocation only in exceptional cases.
Our tests have shown that barely one per cent of CFN fonts on the market
have a character allocated to this position, so there should be little
chance of a data collision if you insert a Euro character into such a font.
In addition, theoretically the Euro character appears in this position in
the Atari ASCII character set, so it could be used during text entry in the
text editor Eddie, as well as in dialog boxes.
Incidentally, if you load PostScript Type 1 fonts, it is determined
immediately whether these already contain a Euro character, if so it is
moved to this predefined position (generally ASCII 238) automatically.
The chosen Euro character is inserted into the font at its correct
height, taken from the versal height of the versal-H. In this way, size
conflicts with Medieval digits can be avoided. If the versal-H position of
the font is empty, then the height of the Euro character is taken from the
Topline and Baseline as defined in the font.
Selecting a Euro character immediately updates the Preview pane, which you
can alter by clicking on it.
If there's already a character in the Euro position (generally ASCII
238), then a red warning triangle appears next to the "OK" button. If you
click on the triangle then an explanation of the warning is shown.

2.7 Show Font Overview

The current font is shown in its entirety and as large as possible in a
dialog. Point to a character with the mouse and its ASCII value will be
shown at the bottom left corner.

2.8 Change Font Name

The font name and picture can be edited or altered. If you click this
icon a selection dialog appears, which always shows the original font
picture at the top. Below that follows some variations of the font picture,
updated on the basis of the new font name entered in the line at the bottom.

This function amongst other things is useful for working on fonts
produced by TypeArt or font converters such as Type-2-Type. It's well known
that the font picture contained within Type-2-Art generated fonts will only
display correctly with a b&w screen, otherwise almost always a garbage
display is shown that is neither meaningful nor useful. In addition you can
also work on home-made fonts or those produced by FonTools.

2.9 Copy Font

With this function a font that is present in Calamus can be copied.
Since Calamus does not allow two fonts with the same name to be present at
the same time, the filename is numerically incremented if a suitable digit
is present. Use it to make one or more copies of fonts in memory before
working on them with FonTools. Copies are automatically assigned the second
font picture from the function "Change Font Name" so that they can be
differentiated from the original. Note that if a font file is named for
example FONTNAME.CFN (using the full 8+3 characters), then the first copy
would be named FONTNAM1.CFN. On operating systems which do not support long
filenames this can lead to conflicting filenames. We recommend (and not only
for this reason) using operating systems which support long filenames.

Tip: To remove surplus font copies from memory, call the
"Load/Remove/Replace Fonts" dialog from the Text Style module and remove
them manually. Alternatively, you can automatically clear them with the
function "Unused Fonts" in the Options menu "Fix Document".

2.10 Select Current Font

This function determines the current font in a text (current
text frame, current text cursor position, active block etc..). This function
only makes sense if the font window is opened, as it is here where the
selection is made.

2.11 Fill In Undefined Characters

This function is useful to tell if a replacement font used for a document
has any missing characters that are needed by the document. Test printouts
or the Character Set overview window often do not help. You can occupy all
such characters with either a so-called "Not Defined Box" or a "Turned
Character", so any missing characters are not printed as spaces.
The Not Defined Box is a guideline of the PostScript definitions, and
is already reserved in many PostScript Type 1 or TrueType typefaces. The PS
Type 1 fontloader in Calamus SL99 suppresses these characters so that you
can insert them yourself if you require. Test printouts will thus show any
missing characters for later correction.
The Turned Character is a filled box which produces ugly marks that
have only one purpose on test printouts: to quickly see which characters are
missing. The concept "Turned" comes from hot-metal composition, and denotes
characters that are inserted into the line of type upside-down, thus
printing a black rectangle.

2.12 Reformat All Text Frames

If you change fonts that are used in the document, you
should immediately afterwards call this function to recalculate the text
flow in the document's text frames. The mouse pointer will take on the
well-known Abacus form until all the text frames have been reformatted.

2.13 Save Font as CFN

The currently selected font is saved as a CFN, and Calamus immediately
takes on the new name. The extention ".CFN" is automatically assigned, so
there is no need to specify it. If an original font is copied or changed,
then the saved file retains the same information (manufacturer, copyright,
etc...). If there is already a file with the same name, then you are asked
if the file should be overwritten.
Tip: Naturally you can directly load the so-called PostScript Type 1
typefaces with Calamus SL99, where these typefaces are changed internally
to CFN typefaces. Thus often-used Type 1 typefaces can be directly changed
to CFN typefaces, making external font converters such as Type-2-Type or
Fonty superfluous.

2.1 4 Open Font Window

This icon opens the current font window, if it isn't already open. In
this window the details of the current fonts are shown either on a single
line, or in columns. This setting can be changed in the third command group
(Settings) (see below).

To work on a font in this command group you must first choose the font
from the font window, so it's necessary to open this window before starting
work on a font. It closes automatically when the command group "Current
Fonts" is exited.

Tip: It's possible to elect to have this window always in the
foreground in the "Settings" command group to make font selection easier
than is generally possible in the Text Style Module.

By doubleclicking on a font entry both the font name and the font image
can be edited, as already described under "Change Font Name".
Since only one font can be chosen for processing at a time, any
previously selected font is automatically deselected on selecting another
font.

3 Font Browser

The command group "Font Browser" administers the Calamus CFN and Type 1
fonts that you can load into MGI Calamus SL99. These are listed accordingly
in Font Browser windows. Calamus SL for some time has managed fonts stored
in two paths, a fixed and a variable. In Font Browser you can not only work
on fonts found in these same paths, but also a third path which FonTools
manages.

The current Font Browser path can be selected with the three switches
in the top group:

	= Fixed SL Font Path
	= Variable SL Font Path
	= FonTools Font Browser Path

The third command group (Settings) more closely defines what is
displayed in the Font Browser windows (see below).
Generally, folders are indicated by a preceding triangle (similar to a
MacOS or jinnee directory). If you click on such a triangle, the folder is
opened and the files within it are listed. Clicking on a directory with the
Shift key pressed alternately selects and deselects its contents. The three
switches in the icon row can be used instead:

	= Deselect All Entries

	= Select All Entries

	= Open/Close Selected Folder(s)

(A typical Font Browser window)

3.1 Font Browser: Fixed Font Path

This switch specifies that Font Browser should use the absolute font
path set in Calamus.

3.2 Font Browser: Variable Font Path

This switch specifies that Font Browser should use the relative font
path set in Calamus.

3.3 Font Browser: Defined Font Path

This switch specifies that Font Browser should use its own fontpath. This
can only be defined in the Font Browser (command group "Settings", see
under). If the Font Browser window is open, then clicking on the icon with
the Control key pressed opens the usual file selector box. There you can
directly change the Font Browser path.

3.4 Deselect All Entries

All entries in the Font Browser are deselected.

3.5 Select All Entries

All entries in the Font Browser are selected.

3.6 Open/Close Selected Folders

All selected folders are opened if they are closed, and closed folders
are opened. If the Shift key is pressed, opening a folder also selects all
the contents.

3.7 Show Font Overview

One or more selected fonts are displayed in a dialog. As many fonts as
are desired can be selected in the Font Browser, and cycled through using
the Arrow keys. Any fonts that are not currently loaded into memory are
loaded, and unloaded later.

The Preview field always shown the current example text, which you can
alter in the Command Group "Settings" or by clicking on the field. Beneath,
as many as possible of the character set of the chosen font is shown.
The button "Load" loads the chosen font into Calamus so that it will
not be removed afterwards.
If a font cannot be displayed (because of faulty data etc.), then the
window will be empty and a red sign will be shown with the fontname. Click
on this to show more information about the faulty font.

3.8 Print Font Catalogue

This central and long-awaited function offers many ways to print out
your fonts in handy catalogues. In the Calamus folder DOCUMENT\FONTOOLS
you'll find some examples of the special document that is needed for this
function. If you develop your own font sample documents, then we would be
grateful if you could send them to us for the benefit of others. As many
different fonts as required may be printed on a page. To do this some
special commands are entered into a document, as described in the
following.
Fundamentally, only text frames which are not grouped or masked are
altered by FonTools when generating the catalogue pages (so that one can
be certain that they cannot be altered). If the name of the first font is
to be placed on the print page in a text frame, then one should (with the
text editor Eddie), enter a comment with the content #FONTNAME1# and at the
end another comment with the content #END#
	Example: Fontname: [FONTNAME1#]Helvetica[#END]
When the catalogue pages are generated, the word "Helvetica" will be
replaced by the name of the current font.
The same procedure is also valid for font filenames (#FILENAMEn#) and
the current font path (#FONTPATHn#).
If a text frame with the current font should be produced, then a
comment with the keyword #FONTn# should be entered. Such a text frame must
have only one text style, since in this case only the first style is
altered!
So, to print a font catalogue the following steps are required:
	* Load an appropriate font catalogue document
	* Select the required fonts in the Font Browser window
	* Adjust the printer parameters in the Calamus print dialog
Click on the icon "Print Font Catalog" and you'll see the following
dialog:

If you followed all three steps then nothing more stands in the way of
printing out all the pages (that is, unless there is no more paper in the
printer ...)

3.9 Load Selected Fonts

All fonts selected in the Font Browser are loaded into Calamus. This is
probably the most convenient way of selecting fonts from an overview window,
without the need for a file selector box they are quick to load. The
obsolete Font Juggler can thus be sent to the rubbish heap!
Tip: In order to remove unused surplus font copies from memory, call
the dialog "Load/Remove/Replace Fonts" from the Text Style Module and
remove them manually. Alternatively, choose the menu item "Fix Document",
and with the option "Unused Fonts" the document can be cleared
automatically.

3.10 Open Font Browser Window

This icon will open the the Font Browser window, if it isn't already
open. In this window the fonts in the current font path are shown. The way
that they are displayed can be changed in the third command group
"Settings" (see below).

A font can be loaded immediately by doubleclicking on it.
A doubleclick on a folder opens it. Shift+doubleclicking on a folder
opens it and selects all its contents.
Alternatively, the Options menu item "Select All" can be used instead.
If the Font Browser window is opened again (after changing to another
module or command group in the FonTools module), it is examined to see
whether the access path has been changed and whether it still exists. The
font names are cached (buffered), and only the the CFN picture is reloaded
with each window redraw so that the module's memory requirement is not
increased too much.

4 Settings

All FonTools settings can be set in this command group. These settings
can be saved and reloaded at any time. If a file called FONTOOLS.SET is
found when the module is started, it will be loaded and the settings used
straight away.

4.1 Module Info

This is the obligatory module information. If you have questions or
need support for the module then please note FonTool's version number, in
case an update or upgrade version is needed.

4.2 Settings: Current Fonts

Specifies whether fonts should be listed in lines or columns. The
behaviour of the font window can also be set, e.g. whether it should open
automatically when called from the "Current Fonts" command group.

4.3 Settings: Font Browser

Here can be set whether the fonts list in the Font Browser should also
show the full font name and (with CFN fonts), the font image. The font
image is reloaded with each redraw, so a slow hard drive can slow down work
in the Font Browser. On the other hand, the font image increases the ease
of recognizing fonts substantially.

Also you can influence the behaviour of the Font Browser window, for
example whether it should open as soon as the command group "Font Browser"
is called. With the switch "Keep folder structure" you can specify that
FonTools is to note which files in the current font path you have opened.
Thus you can avoid having to reread the current Font Browser directory each
time you change modules.
You can also set the third, FonTools Font Browser Path here. Save the
settings in the FONTOOLS.SET file immediately afterwards to ensure that the
settings will be valid for the next program start.

4.4 Define Sample Text

The sample text which is used in the various dialogs in the command
group "Current Fonts" can either be set directly in the dialogs or here:

Save the settings in the FONTOOLS.SET file immediately afterwards to ensure
that the settings will be valid for the next program start.

4.5 Load Setup

You can load or reload a setup file with this icon. The default name of
this file is FONTOOLS.SET, and the module expects to find it in the current
modules path. There is usually no need to change the filename, doing so
might cause a conflict with other modules which likewise save their setup
files in the modules folder.

4.6 Save Setup

This icon will allow you to save all of FonTools settings. The default name
of this file is FONTOOLS.SET, and it points to the current modules access
path. This filename should not normally be changed, doing so might cause a
conflict with other modules which likewise save their setup files in the
modules folder. Never (!) save the setup using the filename CALAMUS.SET
