HISTORY (sorted by date in reverse order)
          -----------------------------------------
11.01.2000
	- A small error when loading Mac fonts remedied; with some fonts
the POST resource was interpreted incorrectly. The fonts
were not loaded or were given the wrong name.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
09.11.99
	- Very long filenames could lead to a crash, though this has
	  not yet happened to anyone????
---------------------------------------------------------------------
26.05.99
	- Crashes when accessing the font container of the Chicage font
       remedied.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
16.05.99
	- Pair kerning improved, should be correct now ;-)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
04.03.99
	- The Euro character is now at ASCII 238
	- frg and cze betas created
---------------------------------------------------------------------
22.02.99
  - [Fanfare sounds in the background] ....... According to the latest
messages the Type 1 importer can now also adopt the pair kerning from
font containers. Stay with it, you can switch off elsewhere .....
---------------------------------------------------------------------
21.02.99
	- Small error in the FOND lib killed
---------------------------------------------------------------------
18.02.99
	- Getting back to point 2 of yesterday. If a font after loading has
fewer than 4 characters, the loading process is broken off, then
loaded again with its own coding. Thus the Alt key should be of
	  little consequence now.

	- This is a glorious day, from today the suitable container will be
found for every Mac font (if it is in the same directory). As a
matter of record I'd like to explain the events briefly:

User : Without much thought selects a Mac Type 1 font

Type 1 loader: Damn, this will be a lot of work, I'll load the
	                 actual font data first.

	                 [load, load]

Ah, there is the font name (somewhere in the file)
	                 e.g. "HelveticaNew-BoldItalic".

Where now is the blasted container?

So I'll look first at the first container in this
directory. For this I have to work my way through
the resource fork; yes, here are the FOND
resources. OK, let's start with the first. Load the
style map and then dissect the 'Style Name Table'
first. This contains the basic name "HelveticaNew"
as well as all adjuncts, e.g. "-", "Bold", "Italic"
etc. as well as a combination table. Lovely, in
this FOND there are only 20 different styles, these
will be looked through one after the other and if a
style name equals the font name then I have found
	                 the correct FOND resource. ..., ..., ...

Naturally it was not the first container, but only
the 8th that I have found. Unfortunately there is
                   no other possibility. Oh dear....

User : That took a long time ...

       Type 1 loader: Idiot

---------------------------------------------------------------------
17.02.99
  - There are some fonts that use different code values from those
documented by Adobe. Unfortunately this can only be established by
stubborn try-outs. The region 1-65535 has to be tested. On a
Quadra this takes around half an hour, but since this is unacceptable
at each loading process there is now an internal list. If a font
cannot be decoded, giving an appropriate error message, then the font
has to be sent to me.
  - Some symbol fonts do not specified that they are such fonts. These
are then loaded like normal fonts and only the bullets arrive. With
the Alt key one can force an assignment as stored in the font and
    get all the characters.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
15.02.99
	- Due to a small error no loaded font has been serialized yet.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
07.02.99
	- With some fonts the combination characters (, , , , , etc.)
did not work. Now it does.

	- With Mac Berthold fonts some characters were badly mangled. The
best of this is that I have no idea why this happens.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
04.02.99
	- First clodhopper in the 'FOND' resources.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
03.02.99
	- Created a lib with which one can read out elements from a resource
fork. Thus one needn't use the Mac resource commands and bother
	  with Mac memory management.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
01.02.99
	- From today I can finally access the font containers anchored in
	  the system.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
31.01.99
	- CZE allocation table incorporated.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
29 - 30.01.99
	- Worked on the incorporation of Mac routines, doesn't yet work
	  fully.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
27.01.99
	- The allocation table can now be swapped for foreign language
       versions.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
26.01.99
	- Character allocation revised, there is now only one allocation
table irrespective how the characters were stored in the font
(exception: Fonts with symbols). The allocation now takes place
as displayed in the DMC font catalogue (page 27), with the areas
192-216, 218-220, 223-240 still free. If anyone wants these
assigned then he should let me know.
	- The Euro character is always placed at ascii 157.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
25.01.99
	- With the Mac fonts sent in by Volkmar the decoding went wrong, now
	  it works.
	- If two fonts were loaded and only the first was accompanied by
kerning info in an AFM file, then this was used for the second as
well. This gave almost random kerning effects.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
14.01.99
	- Small change to fnt_load, now it ought to work with the embedded
       ones too.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
04.01.99
	- Now the conversion of the pair kerning values should be correct.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
03.01.99
	- Pair kerning is now adopted from the AFM files (Adobe Font Metrics).
At present the conversion is not quite correct yet, but that will
	  change for certain.

Though AFM files do not have much importance, the pair kerning
mechanism works now. As soon as I can access the PFM files and
Mac containers the rest should go very quickly.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
23.12.98
	- First beta version. Warning: No pair kerning support as yet.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
19.12.98 ff
	- Attempt to access the Mac containers, though that's as far as it
	  goes till now.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
18.12.98
	- All problem fonts from Ulf are now rejected if they are faulty,
	  or not serialized when the first 66 characters are not occupied;
this no longer causes a crash.
	- The Eurofont has proved to be obstinate, Fonty assumed that at
the end of the actual data null-bytes were always appended.
As it could not find them in the Eurofont, the importer crashed.
	- Standard import driver interface incorporated.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
17.12.98
	- Font thumbnails: Now only the first 4 characters are output as the
font name. The rest is done with the system font.
	- Some preparations for Mac containers.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
11.12.98
	- it's adat time ...
Fonts in which the first 66 characters are not occupied are
		no loger serialized now.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
09.12.98
	- Unfortunately not every font container is found yet. Up to now
I have proceeded from the assumption that the font family name
was equal to the container name. But that's only partly true.
There is, for instance, a Condensed Garamond line from ITC that
has the family name "ITC Garamond" and the container is called
"ITC Garamond Condensed". In the detailed font name however there
is "ITC Garamond Condensed ..."; the next attempt will then try
out all variants from the font name.

But this can only be done when the family name has not produced
a result. And what happens if there is a container named
"ITC Garamond", but I need the "... Condensed"?

	  One could cry ...........

	- Mac resource file format looked for, found and read.

A small note in passing: For over a year I have now programmed
little apart from import/export modules; I'm slowly getting fed up.
As I said, just in passing ...
---------------------------------------------------------------------
08.12.98
	- The file info dialog could case probelms when a Mac file was not
	  recognized as a loadable font.
	- PFM handling prepared, but I am still missing the docs about the
	  file format.
	- "I stiiil have no cooontainer in Berlin": Oh well, in any case I
now know how one can find the container that matches a Mac PS font.
Apparently there are no docs about this ...
	- Container docs read, oh oh.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
07.12.98
	- Fonty now loads in a Mac PS Type 1 fonts as well. It recognizes
them when the data fork of a file has zero size and the file type
	  is set to "LWFN" (Laser-Writer-Font).

But one should forego loading multiple master fonts, though
who knows somebody may perhaps want this.
	- During conversion the mouse cursor will be animated.
	- During import a small info dialog is always displayed now.
	- The Fonty thumbnail name cration has been thrown out, making the
	  importer faster.

The next level should be exciting, we will be dealing with Mac
'FOND' resources and how one can find the matching container for a
	  PS font.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
06.12.98
	- First trials with Mac PS Type 1 fonts; a trial is as far as it's
got, unfortunately. Calamus does not pass on what it regards as
empty files to the font importer.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
03.12.98 - 05.12.98
	-	Font serializtion made to work, all Type 1 fonts are now
serialized. Still missing is the check whether the first 66
		characters are in use.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
27.11.98
	- Every font now gets a matching thumbnail image of its name.
	- First attempts at serialization.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
26.11.98
	- Harald has a birthday today, so I don't want to set any awkward
	  questions ...
	- With driver execution one now gets to see an info dialog.
	- Version checking built in.
	- Fonty no longer throws error messages around when it is presented
with a non-Type 1 file. The error #16 is created by Calamus itself.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
25.11.98
	- I am trying at present to create a thumbnail of the font name
when creating the font. Unfortunately this is still going wrong,
	  I'll have to consult Harald.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
24.11.98
	- During a power outage a part of this file was unfortunately
mangled. But not that much has happened yet. Fonty is now a
real font import driver and works with a Calamus version from
	  the 20.11.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
(Reconstruction of a mangled file, the original was unfortunately
overwritten by the safety backup copy).

17.11.98
	- From now on the whole memory management works via Calamus functions.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
16.11.98
	- Character exchange table now incoprporated as TABEL.H, this need
now no longer be present as an external file.
	- Important areas of the memory management routines revised.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
15.11.98
	- Sourcecodes rebuilt to Calamus file functions.
	- The files are loaded, but the font can no longer be decoded.
	  mhhhh...
	- Sourcecodes rebuilt from lattic char behaviour to c conversion.
	- Fonty now converts fonts as a Calamus module. At present the
TOS memory management routines are still used.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
10.11.98
	- Start of fonty development.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
