  Problems when working with Eddie

A number of apparent errors in Eddie were reported to us, which on
closer inspection turned out to be problems in the Calamus system.
Here is a list of these stumbling blocks:

   Lost key presses

Some keys had to be pressed twice in succession to make a character
appear. This is however not a bug but a feature! It concerns the
dead-key mechanism built into Calamus, which naturally can also be
configured (Text module, "Key Bindings Editor" and System module).

If a fixed built-in key combination does not work in Eddie, then in
some circumstances this can be due to macro programming that is
already present. Thus for instance ClrHome normally forces a
redraw of the active (document) window and is thus not available for
Eddie. In such cases the assignments should be altered in such a way
that no collisions appear. Read more about this in KEYS.TXT.

Error "Unknown version number" when loading Search & Replace setups

If this error message appears while loading Search & Replace setups,
then it is due to the absence of the Document Converter. The SES
files are built up on the 1993 document format and so may have to be
converted during loading. Simply load the module DOC_CONV.CXM that is
part of the Calamus package and try again.

   ClipArt Module

The cooperation between Eddie and the alternative clipboard module
"ClipArt" doesn't work. For some inconceivable reason ClipArt always
accesses the document window and Eddie is never addressed by the
module. Please turn to the creators of ClipArt for a solution of
    this problem.

Calamus Clipboard module (rectified from Calamus SL of 1994 on)

The transport of text via the Calamus clipboard from Eddie to the
Text module only works from the '94 version onwards. The '93 Text
module accepts only the text data that it has itself placed in the
clipboard. It can even happen that it will not accept these data
either! This effect happens if Eddie is the FIRST to place text in
the clipboard. Experiments have shown, however, that the error
should be looked for in the Text module and can at times be
    reproduced even without Eddie:

    - Launch Calamus, DON'T load Eddie (and Bombadil)
    - Load or create a document with text
    - In the Text module, mark a block and copy it to the clipboard
    - Remove the Text module from memory
    - Reload the Text module
    - The text can now no longer be transferred from the clipboard to the
      frame (message: "No text! ...")

The situation is the same as if Eddie had been the first to use the
clipboard: the Text module finds at the first attempt to use it after
it has been reloaded that there are already text data on the
clipboard and for some reason can not handle this.

From the '94 version onwards these problems no longer arise.

Windows moved over left screen edge (rectified from Calamus SL 96 on)

If one moves Calamus windows outside the left edge of the screen
(which is only possible with operating system extensions such as
WinCom, for instance), Calamus gets muddled and interprets this as a
mouse click on the Fuller button of the window. By installing
BOMBADIL this effect can be bypassed.

This error was rectified in Calamus SL 96.

   Character Set Overview

In the character set overview that one can call up with Control+Esc
in any dialog (provided it contains an editable field) the system
font rather than the Eddie font is used to display the text. The only
exception: The overview is called directly from an Eddie window.
Unfortunately the dialog manager of Calamus is so strongly
encapsulated and not accessible from the outside that there is
no possibility to link in one's own character set overview.

   Macro recorder

During the recording of a key binding macro you may get the message
"Error in the error display; Calamus should be closed down". This
message is - in this special case - harmless and means the following:

    - An alert box is currently opened
      and
    - the recorder was switched on and immediately off again, so that not
one action was recorded (in that case actually a further alert box
ought to appear to warn the user about this; but since nested alert
boxes are not permitted in Calamus, one gets this error message
      instead).

   Automatic window scrolling

For automatic window scrolling Eddie uses the mechanisms that are
built into in Calamus for this purpose. Unfortunately these still
have one or more bugs. The window management in Calamus is however
built in such a way that one can not make use of one's own routines
    for this.

Display errors in the Text module

The Text module leaves fragments of block markings visible when one
    lets text flow back into a frame. The block is no longer selected;
it's simply a question of stray pixels. In addition the text cursor
of the layout editor is sometimes drawn so as to "shine through"
    other windows.

   Adding Text Style lists

If after opening a text window further text styles are created in the
Text Style module, the selection window in Eddie can no longer be
opened (that appears when inserting styles or double-clicking on
style control codes)! This problem may be overcome by the
    installation of BOMBADIL.

Windows cannot be clicked on any more (remedied from Calamus SL 96 on)

Under multitasking extensions such as MagiC, general problems with
Calamus windows can arise when other applications have already
opened several windows. In some circumstances no keyboard input
or mouse clicks are accepted any more. Examination has established
that the corresponding event messages are lost somewhere in Calamus
and never arrive at the receiver (in this case Eddie).

Remedy: When launching Calamus it is better if no windows of other
    applications are open, if possible.

In addition there is a further problem - also under Multitasking
operating systems: Events will be reported to the editor only if
the mouse cursor is over a Calamus window or the desktop. If the
mouse cursor is over a window of another application, keyboard
input will be "swallowed" and only handled later. This problem also
affects the Text module, for instance.

These errors were remedied in Calamus SL 96.

   Magnification not adjustable

When an Eddie window is active, one cannot set the magnification
for a document window lying at the back. This also happens with
PKS Write and is due to Calamus.
