# BRL-CAD for old Unix

Getting BRL-CAD onto HP-UX 9.x, SunOS 4/5, IRIX 5 and friends.

src/ buildable source releases, exported from BRL-CAD's original CVS
at their release tags, plus the 4.4 Solaris package
bin/ 32 period binaries: IRIX, Solaris, FreeBSD, Linux
vcs/ the raw CVS repository everything in src/ came from
           (clone of github.com/BRL-CAD/vcs-history)

## Start here

`src/BUILD-NOTES.md`. Short version: use `brlcad-4.4`, run `cp sh/*.sh .`
before `setup.sh`, build with `cake`.

For prebuilt binaries see `bin/README.md` — per-platform install commands.

## Why this exists

BRL-CAD went open source in Dec 2004 at release 7.0. Everything before that
shipped only to recipients who signed an ARL distribution agreement, so there
are no public period binaries and no public period source tarballs.

- **SourceForge is useless for this.** It only ever carried 7.0 and later,
which is the autoconf rewrite. 7.0 dropped HP-UX entirely and needs Tcl/Tk 8.4.
- **The source survives in version control, not in tarballs.** BRL-CAD's CVS
history goes back to 1983 and is public. `src/` is built from it.
- **The binaries survive only in ARL's encrypted FTP archive**, recovered from
the Wayback Machine and decrypted. See `bin/README.md` for provenance.

## Why the CVS repo and not the git repo

`github.com/BRL-CAD/brlcad` lost most pre-7.0 release tags in conversion --
`rel-1-20`, `rel-1-24`, `rel-2-3`, `rel-3-0`, `rel-3-5`, `rel-4-0`, `rel-4-4`,
`rel-4-5`, `rel-5-4` and `rel-6-0-2` exist only in the raw CVS under `vcs/`.
Approximating a release by commit date instead is close but not exact: for 4.4
it gets 31 of 1593 files wrong.

    brew install cvs
    CVSROOT=$PWD/vcs/brlcad_cvs cvs -R export -r rel-4-4 -d brlcad-4.4 brlcad

`cvs export` also expands the RCS keywords, as the original tapes had them.

## No HP-UX binaries exist

Anywhere -- encrypted or not. ARL shipped HP-UX as source only. For a 9000/700,
build `src/brlcad-4.4`; its `Cakefile.defs` has the HPUX 9.0 block.
